Everything You Wanted to Know About Motorcycle Tyres

From radial vs bias, tyre dating and pressure to tread selection — the essentials, all in one place.

Everything You Wanted to Know About Motorcycle Tyres

A motorcycle tyre is a precision rubber composite. Because rubber uniquely combines high elasticity with high elongation, it forms the ideal contact between machine and road — but the way that rubber is engineered makes all the difference.

Construction is the first fork in the road. Bias (oblique) tyres use crossed plies for strength and value; radial tyres use plies at 90° with a stabilising belt for high-speed stability and cornering precision. Each has its place.

Reading a sidewall unlocks everything: nominal width, aspect ratio, rim diameter, load index and speed symbol. The DOT code reveals the week and year of manufacture — essential for stock rotation.

Correct inflation pressure is the single biggest factor in safety, wear and fuel efficiency. Under-inflation increases heat and wear; over-inflation reduces the contact patch and grip.
